Q: What do I need to
take lessons?
A: Just your own guitar, and a positive frame of mind!
I have
extra guitars you can use for the lesson if you choose not to bring yours.
Eventually you will need picks,
extra strings, cables, an electronic tuner and an amplifier for electric guitars.
Q: How long
will it take for me to get good?
A: Everybody learns at a different pace. Choosing songs you like
right away helps speed this up. With steady practice almost everyday, a solid beginner can convincingly play a popular
song within a month or two.
Q: Do you teach at the student's home?
A:
Yes, if it's in San Francisco. Most house calls start from $45 per hour lesson, but I am flexible.
Q: Is it better to start on acoustic guitar, then switch later to electric?
A: Start on
the instrument you want to learn. Listen to your favorite songs and determine which type of guitar is used.
Q: What are good models/brands to buy?
A: For classical acoustic: Cordoba and Yamahas
are good starter guitars. For electrics: Yamahas, Squier, Epiphone and Ibanez are good starters.
Q: What's a good place to buy them?
A: Online check out
MusiciansFriend.com,
Music123.com and
zZounds.com. In San Francisco check out Guitar Center, Rocker Guitars, Guitar Solo (acoustic) and Noe Valley Music.
Q: How do your group classes work?
A: Students drop by whenever they want. Because
of that, everyone's age and level is different for every class. I split my attention to every student, and sometimes
instruct the entire class at once. I teach absolute beginners all the way to advanced students. Rhythm, chords,
theory, scales, songs, you name it, I'll teach you.
I am working on having structured group
classes with specific skill levels, and will announce them when they are available.
